Abbie Ward: A Rugby Comeback and a New Chapter in Motherhood

England Rugby World Cup winner Abbie Ward (R 09-11) has once again demonstrated that motherhood and a professional rugby career can go hand in hand, returning to the pitch following the birth of her second daughter, Lila, in July 2026.

The Bristol Bears lock made her comeback on 31 October, starting in the second row against Saracens in the PWR Next Gen Cup semi-final. Her return marks another significant milestone in a remarkable career that has seen her challenge perceptions of motherhood in elite sport.

Ward first made headlines in 2023 when she returned to rugby just 17 weeks after giving birth to her eldest daughter, Hallie. She went on to become a key member of the Red Roses squad that lifted the Rugby World Cup on home soil in 2025, starting and scoring in the final.

Her journey has helped inspire a new generation of players and highlighted the importance of supporting women to balance family life with their sporting ambitions. With the backing of Bristol Bears and the RFU’s maternity policy, Ward continues to show that becoming a mother need not mean stepping away from the game.

Her latest comeback is a powerful reminder of her resilience, determination and the changing landscape of women’s rugby.

Editorial note: I have focused on her return rather than the semi-final result, which saw Bristol lose 42–26 to Saracens.

I can also make this more personal and celebratory, with a stronger emphasis on Abbie as an inspiration to young female athletes.
