1525 Society

The 1525 Society exists to recognise those in the Sedbergh Community who wish to support Sedbergh School Foundation by leaving a gift in their will.

If you would like to know more about the 1525 Society please contact the Foundation on foundation@sedberghschool.org or 015242 79217.

The 1525 Society is one of the largest legacy societies of any independent school in the country. Since 2002 it has helped to provide many 100% funded Roger Lupton Scholarships for talented children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Society has also supported a number of capital projects, such as the Hirst Centre, which continue to play their part in the educational and sporting excellence for which Sedbergh is renowned.

The current President is Major General Jonathan Shaw CBE (S 71-75).

“Every Old Sedberghian has benefited hugely from Sedbergh and carries an appreciation of what the School offers. The 1525 Society is a real chance to give back to the young people coming through, especially those who might not otherwise be able to access a Sedbergh education. My greatest memory from my time here? I can’t choose, because there are just so many. Running outdoors, sport, friendships away from screens, time in the hills, the kind of mental health and perspective that feels increasingly rare in a mechanised world. That environment is unusual and worth protecting. And the 1525 Society is a really good way of making that contribution to both the institution, but more particularly to the youth of tomorrow, on whom in the end we’ll all rely.” – Jonathan Shaw

1525 Wood and Avenue

Every member bequeathing a minimum of £1,000 to the School will have their name, house and years at Sedbergh featured on a plaque in the 1525 Wood should they wish. The 1525 Wood is a 2 acre site adjacent to Bruce Lock where around 500 indigenous broadleaf trees have been planted to protect and enhance the natural beauty of the countryside so integral to the Sedbergh experience. It serves as a lasting tribute to the generosity of 1525 Society members and as a memorial garden for Old Sedberghians.

Birch and oak trees have also been planted to create the 1525 Avenue which offers a superb frame for a view of the main School building from Busk Lane with the Cloisters below and Winder above. Each of these major specimens should have a lifespan of at least 100 years and offer the opportunity for OS to mark their legacy to the School in a particularly significant setting. This honour is given to every 1525 Society member bequeathing a minimum of £25,000. A plaque will feature the name, house and years at Sedbergh of the donor.
